Teeth Whitening
Our precious tooth enamel can become stained or discolored over time for lots of reasons, including hygiene, diet, genetics, and even certain medications. Meanwhile, for better or worse, it’s becoming clear a bright white smile is carrying ever-greater social importance. If you’re wishing for a brighter smile, Brooklyn Dental Collective can help with KöR teeth whitening in NYC!
What Causes Yellow or Discolored Teeth?
First, a quick exploration of how teeth staining works. Your tooth’s enamel is white, and the layer underneath—dentin—is yellow. As we age, the enamel wears away and exposes the dentin. Other causes and contributing factors may include:
- Plaque or calculus
- Beverages like wine, soda, coffee, tea
- Dark foods, including colored candies, tomato sauces, curry, soy sauce, etc.
- Tobacco use or vaping
- Antiseptic or antimicrobial mouthwashes
- Tetracycline antibiotics
- Cavities, dental trauma, and amalgam fillings
- Overexposure to fluoride in childhood
- Genetic causes
Many types of discoloration can be reversed with a whitening treatment. If you have discolored teeth, reach out to Brooklyn Dental Collective to find out if we can help!
How Teeth Whitening Works
All teeth whitening systems use peroxide as a bleaching agent and differ primarily in their concentration and delivery method. Generally, in-office whitening treatments will contain a higher concentration of peroxide than take-home or over-the-counter systems.
KöR Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening systems abound in an overwhelming variety of brands, methods, and sources. Dr. Sager has done the research for you and feels the KöR system is the best choice to offer her patients.
KöR uses a peroxide gel and trays the way many teeth whitening systems do. What distinguishes it from other systems is in how it maximizes effectiveness by thoroughly isolating the teeth and whitening gel from oral fluids, which otherwise quickly neutralize bleaching agents. KöR boasts whitening up to 16 shades, and causes less sensitivity than leading brands. It’s a great teeth whitening option for patients with already-sensitive teeth.
Who is a Candidate for Teeth Whitening?
You may be thinking, “Great! Sign me up!” which we can do, as long as you:
- Have healthy gums and do not need gum therapy like a deep cleaning
- Don’t have any tooth-colored restorations in your smile line (front teeth)*
- Are not allergic to peroxide
- Are not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
*Restorations like composite fillings, crowns, and bridges can be replaced to match a whiter shade if you’re committed to teeth whitening and its maintenance.
Cost of Teeth Whitening
The cost of teeth whitening varies widely. Its price range matches that of new iPhones pretty closely. In terms of confidence gained, it’s priceless!
